Binah Winery is a small boutique winery specializing in the production of certified-kosher wines from the cool-climate mid-Atlantic region of the United States. An urban winery located in Allentown, PA, it is the outgrowth of what started in 2014 as a home winemaking project with family and friends in Kevin’s cellar, much in the same way as Kevin’s great-grandfathers did before him. Binah Winery went commercial for the 2019 harvest season at a small vineyard in Easton, PA, and sold its first bottle of wine in March 2020 upon relocating to its current location in the heart of Allentown.
Binah (pronounced Bee-nah) is Understanding in the Hebrew language. In the mystical realm of the Kabbalah, Binah is the power that distinguishes between one idea and another. It is representative of the contemplative mind, a place in thought where ideas are fully developed. We chose the name Binah for our winery because we see these attributes reflected in the culture of winemaking. Grapes have been grown in a yearly cycle stretching back to ancient days. In every year the grapes capture a reflection of time and place, are picked from the vine, and made into wine. The reflection evolves into a story, its nostalgic essence manifesting in maturity.
On the back label of every bottle of BINAH brand wine is the following poetic line written by Kevin Danna, and succinctly expresses his perspective on winemaking:
“A seed takes root, unfolding from youth. Capturing of time and place. Its nostalgic essence manifesting in maturity.”
Kevin Danna Founding Winemaker
A native of Southern California’s historic Cucamonga-Guasti Wine District, Kevin now finds himself making wine where his great-grandfathers once did: Pennsylvania. Once an assistant winemaker at the Lehigh Valley’s famed Pinnacle Ridge Winery, Kevin was mentored by vintner Brad Knapp, a master of Méthode Champenoise sparkling wine production. Kevin started off as a home winemaker in 2014 and then climbed the ladder through the local wine industry to establish Pennsylvania’s premier kosher winery in 2019. Before finding a passion for winemaking, Kevin’s early career in architectural lighting design left the lasting influence of an elite design philosophy, which continues to shape Kevin’s approach to winemaking as an art and a science.
